Leadership Change at Printed Solid
David Randolph has stepped down as the CEO of Printed Solid, effective January 1st, after nearly a decade at the helm. Randolph’s departure marks the end of an era for the Delaware-based company, which he guided from a small 3D printing supplier to a significant manufacturing hub for Prusa’s European-designed hardware.
Josef Prusa Takes Interim Command
Following Randolph’s exit, Josef Prusa, CEO of the parent company Prusa Research, has assumed the role of interim leader at Printed Solid. This move comes as the company gears up for potential growth and a new phase of North American expansion. While a permanent successor has not yet been named, Randolph will remain involved as a consultant during the transition.
Printed Solid's Growth and Operations
Under Randolph, Printed Solid grew from just three employees to a much larger team, establishing a small print farm in Delaware. This farm produces parts for the MK4S and Core One 3D printers which are assembled locally. Efforts are currently underway to source enough American-made components to allow the printers to carry the "MADE in the USA" label.
Chief Sales Officer Chris Pelesky emphasized that despite the leadership change, operations continue without interruption. The management team, including Prusa Research’s ongoing involvement, remains focused on advancing sales and manufacturing of Prusa 3D printers in the U.S. Pelesky reaffirmed that the company’s core mission remains consistent.
David Randolph's Legacy
David Randolph reflected on his tenure with pride, describing the journey as a highlight of his life. Before joining the 3D printing industry, Randolph worked as a broadcast engineer for the Discovery Channel and G4TV. His passion for retro technology influenced Printed Solid’s unique filament offerings such as Beige 500 and Tan 64 PLA, designed to match classic computing hardware like the AMIGA 500 and Commodore 64.
One of Randolph’s notable contributions was rescuing the Polyalchemy Elixir silk filament from extinction. After the original manufacturer closed, Randolph acquired the formula and spent two years adapting it for Printed Solid’s equipment. This resulted in the glossy Jessie Elixir filament named after his dog and company mascot, Jessie.
Looking Ahead
With Josef Prusa now overseeing Printed Solid, there is a clear vision for growth. Prusa has expressed ambitions to make Printed Solid the largest manufacturer of 3D printers and filament in the United States. While Randolph takes a well-deserved break, the company’s future under Prusa’s interim leadership looks poised for continued expansion and innovation.
Printed Solid remains committed to its mission, supported by a team that is closely aligned with Prusa Research headquarters. The ongoing CEO replacement process is in Prusa Research’s hands, ensuring the next chapter of Printed Solid's journey is well guided.
